WNS has been offering the William Pike Challenge Award to 12 ,Year 7-8 students every year for over 10 years. We were the second school to sign up for this challenge and the first in Te Wai Pounamu.
Every month students are faced with a new challenge which include Kayaking in the Okari, Rock Climbing in Charleston, overnight trips tramping in the Lewis Pass, Mountain Biking on the Heaphy Track on Paparoa Track and many more. At the end of each challenge, students create a report and load it onto the WPC portal. Each participant is expected to complete community service which could involve tree planting, helping with netball, a beach clean up or volunteering in another community projects. Students are also expected to take on a new hobby or learn a new skill like surfing, knitting, baking, photography etc. The WPCA is supported by one of our kaiako, our lead adventurer, Glenn Irving and expert community members. The WPCA is funded with support from the community and main sponsors Buller Electricity and Bathhurst Mining.
